Shenzi
Staff and volunteer favorite Shenzi is also the longest-term current resident of the Santa Fe Animal Shelter. His focus, drive, and appetite for excitement are almost too much for one stout, powerful 60-pound frame to contain. It proved too much for the only adopter he’s ever had, who kept him for less than a week due to her own anxiety about his unsettled transition into her home and limited time to exercise him. She said, “He is just too much dog for me.” Shenzi is a nosework champion, and has dominated this volunteer-run enrichment program more than 34 times, challenging our volunteers to devise ever-more complex puzzles. In recent notes, the leader wrote, “He’s awesome, already in odor when coming into the search area. Totally focused, calms down while searching, thorough, methodical, and engaged.” Shenzi also loves water and probably dreams about tennis balls that grow on trees. We do our best to provide mental and physical enrichment, stimulation, and exercise. But as a long-timer, Shenzi is also proving "too much" for the shelter’s limited resources. This hard-working boy needs a job. He's a people person! At the end of the day, Shenzi loves belly rubs as much as a hard puzzle.
