Shelters throughout the United States and Canada end up with high-energy and intense dogs that are difficult to place in homes because they tend to become destructive and unruly without a job to channel their energies. Many of these dogs will be euthanized, while countless others will live out their lives in shelters. The qualities that make these dogs challenging to adopt may also make them spectacular recruits as detection dogs trained to find hard-to-see wildlife, smuggled elephant tusks, and even the tiniest invasive weed among a mountainside of plants.
